History of the Thunder Mountain Running Club: |
|
The Thunder Mountain Running Club's roots go back to the running boom
in the late 1970s. Sierra Vista and Fort Huachuca were avid running communities and had
just held the inaugural Mule Mountain Marathon (now the Thunder Mountain Marathon) in
1976, but did not have a formal running organization. The Fort Huachuca Commanding
General, in order to promote running on post, asked his Secretary of the General's Staff
to organize a running club. In August of 1977, (MAJ) Pryor "Skip"
Dougherty became the first official member of the running club as well as the TMRC
president. (SSG) Willie Davis, Ron Walter, and Dick Haines were the first club
officers, and they soon organized a race in Huachuca Canyon which was the first
TMRC-sponsored event. Annual races receiving TMRC sponsorship solely or in part
included the Mule Mountain Marathon, the Sun Haven Realty / Sierra Vista Half Marathon,
the Shoe Horn 10 KM, the Culiver 10 KM, and others. The past club presidents have
had a significant impact on running in our community, and include Don Simpson, Ron Witt,
Manny Vera, Will Hill, Bill Bates, Carol Rupkalvis, Denise Lundin, Don Mayer, Tom Meyer,
Tim and Linda O'Connor, Gary Cross, Roberta Gonzales, Barb Chavez, and Sue Fletcher.
Past club members include Danny Lopez (1992 Olympian), Frank Nabity (Olympic Trials
Qualifier), Don Simpson (Mule Mountain Marathon Champion), Will Hill (Dual-Mule Marathon
Champion), Lisa (Yoha) Murchland (Collegiate Cross-Country All-American), and Sue Fletcher
Haines (Multiple Arizona State Age-Group Record Holder). |
