Slaven, MendezShoe Horn 10K winnersSierra Vista Herald / March 23, 1999
SIERRA VISTA Sam Slaven and Jody Mendez were the overall winners in the Shoe
Horn 10K Run Sunday in Sierra Vista.
Slaven, competing in the mens 19-29 age group, won in 37:47. Mendez won in
46:02, taking the womens 40-49 age group as well.
Ryan Parsons was second to Slaven in the age group in 38:56 with Matt Coppi
third in 39:46. Parsons time placed him third overall in the mens race.
Behind Mendez in the 40-49 age group came Kris Reed in 54:20 and Val Hayes in
1:01:57.
Stephen Bostwick won the 14-Under boys race in 49:01. Matt Kelly was second in
51:42 and Steve Harding third in 53:42. Ashlee Bate was the female winner in the
age group with a time of 54:08. Jessica Snell was second in 1:07:48 and Cora
Mesch third in 1:09:04.
Buena High Schools outstanding distance runner, Amy Heran, had the third fastest
time of all the women who ran in winning the 15-18 age group. Heran was timed in
48:52. Conrad Jahn won the boys 15-18 age group in 41:54, followed by Gabriel
Chavez in 43:24 and Edward Romero in 44:3.
Wendy Pressler won the female 19-29 age group in 47:36 and was second overall in
the womens competition. Marial Darby was second in the age group in 49:25 and
Buena High School volleyball coach Kelley Matrtinez was third in 53:47.
Russell Stout took the mens 30-39 age group in 38:20 and was second overall in
the mens race. Jeff Jennings was second in the age group in 40:47 and Michael
Stines was third in 41:02.
Michelle Casey edged Claudia Cross to win the womens 30-39 age group in 51:46.
Cross was clocked in 51:58, with Jeanne Jones third in 52:29.
The 40-49 age group winner was Mike Truett in 49:14. Donald Dunno was second in
51:44 and Rich Besselman was third in 54:30.
Donald Townsend took the mens 50-59 age group with a time of 46:55. Al Murray
was second in 50:09 and Al Larsou third in 50:39. Connie McGinty won the womens
part of the age group in 50:43 with Vista Michael second in 1:09:34.
Harold Hawes and Joe Carey finished 1-2 in the mens 60-69 bracket in 44:22 and
51:00, respectively.
Justin Dannels won the 2-Mile Fun Run in 19:16 with Pedro Solis second in 20:28
and Chad Romero third in 22:16.
