Threepeats! Magergee Wins at the 1st
Thanksgiving San Pedro River Run
The TMRC's 1st
ever San Pedro River Run took place on
Thanksgiving, 23 Nov 00. Thanks to the
efforts of Chris Noble, Sue Fletcher and others, over 30 Bold Souls were able to brave the
cool, windy conditions to test themselves on this beautiful cross country course. Brian Bates, hot off of his wins at the TMRC Half Marathon and FHAZ MICA 10K, was able to best TMRC luminary
Roger Bristow by 13 seconds. The Womens
field was topped by Shuryl Magergee, whom I believe (I only heard part of the
conversation) traveled all the way from the White Mountains for this race. Shuryl please let me know if I am in error. Finishing second to her was Jamie Perez, who
earlier this year won the Lenio 5K for the
female division. What makes Jamies
performances more impressive is the fact that she is still in elementary school!!! Congratulations to everyone involved in this
event, organizers and competitors alike. I
also wanted to take this opportunity to recognize the efforts of those who stayed post
race to help in the search of a young man (a visiting family member of one of our members)
who lost his way on the course. While I
cant possibly thank each and every one of you, I did want to mention by name Harold
Hawes, who ran the entire course again to aid in the search. Hes one of my personal hereos and serves as
an inspiration to all. Oh, and by the way,
the good news is our young friend was found safe and sound.

TMRC
Half Marathon
- 04 Nov 00
Great Job on the
parts of Eric and Kathy Krebs, Randy Bostwick and Family, and Kelly Martinez for
orchestrating (a strong word I know, but with that course, which I loved, anything
describing a major production is appropriate)
The TMRC Half Marathon. While I don have the final results, Brian
Bates garnered the 2nd of his three wins (described above) for the Mens
division. (?) won
for the Female Runners on this grueling 13.1 mile course with its combination of
road and cross-country racing. I counted no
fewer than three water crossings during this race, adding to the steeplechase like feel. Naturally wed also like to thank the members
of the Yaqui Street Firestation who allowed TMRC to once again host this event at their
location. My training partner, 2LT Mark Meyle
and I had such a great time at this race that we immediately agreed to train for and do
the Tucson Marathon. Hindsight being 20/20, I should have agreed to
train for next years Marathon, as those of you who saw me at the Medical Tent post
race can attest. Still, almost everyone I
talked to said they enjoyed this course more than the Thunder Mountain Half Marathon held on Fort
Huachuca last May.
Fordney
Farms 10K - 08 Oct 00
Steve Havens and crew
did a fantastic job with the Fordney Farms 10K. While participation was down from last year with
only 22 runners, those that made the event, a combination race and pot luck breakfast,
enjoyed the camaraderie, beautiful fall weather, and challenging hilly course (mercifully
devoid of traffic) which characterized this event. Of
course, perhaps Im overly fond of this race since I was able to squeeze out a win,
and my daughter Siouxsie, 13, was able to capture the Womens 1st Place
slot. I know this sounds somewhat self
indulgent, but I was very proud to run back for her so we could cross the finish line
together. It will remain one of my fondest
racing memories. At the Club meeting in Oct,
just a few days after, a discussion was held about cancelling this event, but a decision
was made to keep it on the calendar because of the history associated with this race. While still new to TMRC, I believe this is the
oldest continuously run event for the club. Come
out next year and support this great race!
Buffalo
Soldier 24 Run-03 Sep 00
Gary Cross and a cast
of thousands (dozens actually) once again held the Buffalo Soldier 24 Hour Race at the Windemere
Hotel this year. Jerry Schuster, wildman that he is, won with a total of 97 miles over a
field of 15 other runners. Gary and all of
the volunteers who made this happen really are ironmen/women in their own right, for it
took a great deal of stamina and effort just to keep up with the scoring and care of the
athletes competing. Claudia Cross, straight
off of placing at the Inaugural Hummingbird
Triathlon that same morning, still participated in this arduous event. Next year will be the 10th year of this
race.
